アサヒビールのあの有名なオブジェを表現してstool という単語が登場した。 このオブジェ、創業100周年を記念して1989年にスーパードライホールと共に建設されました。燃え盛る炎をデザインし、「フラムドール」(フランス語で金の炎)と呼ばれ、アサヒビールの燃える心を象徴しているとのこと。オブジェが炎、そして下のスーパードライホールが聖火台をイメージしているわけである。 さて、本題のstool について、まず椅子の意味でつかわれ、それがトイレの腰掛を意味するようになり、それから便所（privy）の意味ともなり、今度は便通( bowel movement )を意味するようになったようです。 O.E. stol "seat for one person," from P.Gmc. *stolaz (cf. O.Fris. stol , O.N. stoll , O.H.G. stuol , Ger. Stuhl "seat," Goth. stols "high seat, throne"), from PIE *sta-lo- , locative of base *sta- "to stand" (cf. Originally used of thrones (cf. cynestol "royal seat, throne"); change of meaning began with adoption of chair from Fr., which relegated stool to small seats without arms or backs, then "privy" (1410) and thence to "bowel movement" (1533).
